As mentioned in our recent blog post 2026 Veil catchup in 2025 TradeOgre exchange closed down and some Veil users will have lost their funds on the exchange. This was reportedly due to a large Bitcoin theft, which send amounts to several exchanges, including some to TradeOgre. We heard that TradeOgre refused to hand over the account holder to the Canadian authorities as the other exchanges had done, and when they demanded that TradeOgre turn over their entire server infrastructure to them TradeOgre disappeared rather than to comply! So, the effect is, that your data is safe, but your funds are gone. That exchange didn’t collect KYC anyway, but they would have had metadata and information about wallet addresses and such that Canada would have liked to have recorded.

Veil trading on Probit Global exchange ended. As trade volume on this KYC-collecting exchange continued to decline since KYC/AML requirements had been enforced in Korea, most of us had progressively stopped trading on the exchange. In 2025 it was no longer viable to continue on Probit. People were notified on Discord, if not directly by Probit, and should have all withdrawn their funds.

The long-awaited addition of Veil to the Zelcore multi-currency wallet was finally completed

A number of people connected with the Veil team had also been users of the Zelcore wallet, and the Zelcore team completed adding Veil at last! This provides the same benefit as Veil’s dedicated light wallet, but for people who would like to manage their funds along with those in other coins. Download the Zelcore wallet from: https://zelcore.io/

Our dedicated light wallet has continued to be updated and provides good service

This, as the Zelcore wallet, is a non-custodial light wallet. Your keys are your own, and no-one else holds them.
Being a light wallet, the back-end infrastructure is provided by other people, but only you hold your coins and can spend your coins.

We envisage all Veil team roles to become departmental heads as Veil progresses to the next level. Current team roles are multi-tasking, and VEILionaire is no exception. A detailed changes list is available on the wallet releases page on Github.

In short, the two biggest changes people will notice are:

the substantial speed increase for the wallet to process blocks as the blockchain synchronises (syncs) if the wallet has been disconnected for some weeks or months. Regular blockchain snapshots continue to be provided via Veil.Tools, which is most helpful for first-time wallet startup, or wallets that have been stopped for a much longer time.

the help section “Looks like you are new here!” page now has an easily found question mark icon on the navigation side bar. In previous wallet versions it would only be seen when a new wallet was launched, where no transactions or balances existed, or it could be found in the navigation with difficulty. Now anyone can easily get the first launch help any time.

The actual release date was July 12th, a few weeks earlier than writing this post, and it was only announced in our Discord community and on X.com/Twitter, as there was no rush. this announcement will be followed up with announcements on other platforms in the near future.

Veil Core wallet v1.3.0 is a mandatory update that extends Proof of Work mining from block 2,000,000 (November 2022) until the end of Veil’s Supply (block 9,816,000).
This change has been included in our master branch for a couple of months, but not in any previous release. To be sure, you need to upgrade.

All exchanges, services, miners, stakers, and all users need to upgrade before block 2 million, expected by November, regardless of whether we have another mandatory upgrade activating by then.

This release also creates a RingCT light-wallet API enabling Zelcore to include Veil in their wallet using RingCT privacy.

What this feature does: Zelcore or another wallet using the same API can connect to a Veil core wallet that is launched in light wallet API mode, to enable the third party light wallet to do RingCT transactions and to display the wallet balances.

What this feature does not do: This does not make the Veil core wallet a light wallet in itself.

Miners can now see which Proof of Work type they mined any particular basecoin mining win.

A fix is included for some macOS segmentation faults.

Some refactoring has been committed specific to the future RingCT staking functionality.

The scroll bar height has been given a minimum height so that wallets with many transactions do not find themselves with a microscopic and unusable scroll bar!

We at Veil hope everyone reading this has pulled through in relatively good shape. This special monthly update will cover the year of 2020 as well as December.

2020 Vision: Looking back

A year ago now we introduced our 2020 Vision for Veil, with an outline for how we planned to approach the year. To summarize, we focused on the following goals:

Reliable network of miners and stakers

Truly private and decentralized exchange

Stable and convenient merchant acceptance

Growth of community through additional utility

At the time, we were as unaware as anyone about the unique challenges the year would introduce. Financial hardship, health concerns, and other personal challenges brought about in 2020 saw some Veil staff step away from the project. Nevertheless, we stayed the course but for some necessary pivots.

Reliable network of miners and stakers

Miners

Significant feedback from the community over Veil’s former mining algorithm, X16RT, being easily dominated by ASIC miners brought work on our multi-algo mining solution we introduced at the end of 2019 and implemented with 1.1.0 in October of 2020.

We’re very pleased with the results, and have seen miners flock back to mine ProgPoW, the main mining algorithm, particularly with our partner WoolyPooly. Veil has since been featured on WhatToMine as a top performing GPU mining algorithm. Both CPU algorithms have also been mined, making the PoW change a success.

Stakers

Veil has never encountered issues finding users to stake. The low resource cost, along with significant rewards in these early years, have taken care of staking.
That said, 2020 did see some improvements behind the scenes that improved staking for users: the most recent of these happened in December with updates to the staking status and staking toggle in the GUI.
We hope to further explore staking in 2021 and will have more to say in an upcoming article.

Truly private and decentralized exchange

This goal was without a doubt the biggest victim of 2020’s challenges. The solution here we intend to deliver is one purposed specifically by Veil. With the expedition of the PoW updates ahead of RingCT and its accompanying simplification to a single coin type, this goal has unfortunately been pushed back.
This remains a key goal, and will be something we’ll have more to talk about in the coming months.

Stable and convenient merchant acceptance

In 2020 we made the Veil Ternio BlockCard available to users. The card allows for spending where Visa cards are accepted, acting as a prepaid Visa debit funded by the holder’s veil.

The BlockCard is a huge step towards merchant acceptance, and one we’re proud to present as an option to users. We’ll continue to work towards merchant goals moving into the future, including revisiting plans for some Veil-exclusive merchandise.

- Growth of community through additional utility

The Veil community through 2020 grew in many ways. Numerically statistics show Veil has seen a rise in interest not seen since the initial launch. Sentiment towards Veil has also grown significantly more positive, with much greater engagement on Discord, more presence on Twitter, and resurgence in interest in the Russian mining and broader mining communities.

WhatToMine

The updated PoW consensus model being unique as it is provided some challenges with predicting mining rewards with any degree of accuracy. We worked with WhatToMine to provide a reliable source of mining information for those interested. We’ve seen an influx of miners and new users since, in which we have little doubt WhatToMine has been instrumental.

Furthering non-English support

2020 saw the beginning of focused efforts to better provide non-English speakers with means to access Veil. We started with additional language support to Veil’s stats site providing non-English users with key information.

A lot of work went into building positive relations with our significant Russian community, which led to WoolyPooly becoming Veil’s partner mining pool for our 1.1.0 release.

In the last couple of months of 2020, we began actioning our plan to better penetrate the Chinese market, giving our Chinese users a platform to monitor Veil news at Veil’s new official Chinese Weibo account. Rolling out this plan will continue into 2021.

Other accomplishments of 2020

Outside of our 2020 Vision, we achieved some other goals in 2020. Below are just a few of those.

Significant quality of life improvements and bug fixes to the Veil Core wallet

A lot of the work put in by developers is under the hood, and not readily noticed by users; the work being done is on the kind things that shouldn’t be noticed at all when working properly.

An update of larger impact is the changes to blockchain management. Previously users were experiencing a corruption of their blockchain that reared its head on wallet restart with an ‘Assertion failed’ message. The final wallet build of 2020, 1.1.1, significantly reduced the likelihood of this issue among other improvements.

Rather than going into detail on further examples, we invite you to check the GitHub pull request history to see the many examples yourself.

Budget and expenditure

Throughout 2020 the team made great efforts to minimize spending and accumulate a greater stockpile of veil from budget payouts to better fund the future of the project as rewards decrease over time. We’re very dedicated to the long-term, and so limiting spending only to what’s necessary is important.

The saved veil will allow us to both market Veil better in the future, and to afford partnerships, listings, and other opportunities we otherwise wouldn’t have had we blown through the budget at inopportune times.

While we understand the benefit of this is not yet clear to the community, the wise management of funds is something we are confident will pay off in the future.

TradeOgre listing

Overall our approach to exchange listings through 2020 has been to bide our time until RingCT greatly simplifies the process of adding Veil to, and maintaining it on, new exchanges.

2020 saw a golden opportunity for Veil to be added to TradeOgre exchange, which is very popular among miners. It was too good of an opportunity alongside the 1.1.0 PoW update to pass up. We hope you all are happy having another exchange option available to you.

Social presence

The communications focus of 2020, particularly the latter half, was on building the presence and awareness of Veil at the lowest cost possible. That meant focusing heavily on our presence on Twitter which has proven very successful, and leveraging our existing opportunities such as PoW on WhatToMine covered earlier.

Veil’s Twitter account hosted a number of Veil contests and giveaways, which is something we’ll continue into 2021, and hope you all look forward to participating in.
Veil also increased its presence in our existing Russian community, and started working on building a social presence in China on Weibo. If you’re a speaker of those languages, we encourage you to drop in on those communities.

Closing words and what’s to come

That concludes the 2020 end of year update. We’re looking forward to sharing plenty of new information on what’s to come in 2021. We have a dedicated article exploring upcoming developments and 2021’s goals in the works. Please look forward to that in the near future.

November saw the team focus mainly on quality of life developments, operational optimization, and expansion of promotion into the Chinese market.

Development updates

The release of the new 1.1.0 Veil core wallet in October opened several mining options for users, as well as introducing a number of bug fixes. Since the release, the developers have been watching performance, gathering feedback, and identifying any issues to arise following the transition. While progress on RingCT staking is a high priority, it doesn’t mean support and improvements to the core wallet version 1.1 aren’t to be expected.

Multi-algorithm mining

The new consensus model has overall proven very successful. We’re thrilled to see so many miners taking advantage of the new system—particularly having GPU miners finding blocks with ProgPoW. Veil’s ProgPoW mining has not only been working smoothly, but has proven rewarding, and occupied a place on WhatToMine as a recommended mining coin for GPUs.

If you’re interested in mining Veil, see our 1.1 mining guide article.

RandomX and SHA-256d have also been available to mine, representing a smaller number of blocks. An issue some miners have reported involves a stuck chain while trying to mine with their CPU. Analysis suggests this problem stems from users dedicating too much of their processing power to mining and leaving insufficient resources left to process blocks. This issue and a potential solution are being worked on.

Assertion failed wallet error

Some users have experienced a critical problem with the wallet (with an Assertion failed error message) that fails the pindexWalk->pprev assertion in GetAncestor. This error occurs due to a corruption of the local blockchain on-disk storage. The corruption isn’t readily detectable while the wallet is running, and will not become apparent until the user tries to start the wallet up from their corrupted block database.

The developers have made changes to the block write frequency to help mitigate the corruption of local blockchain data. This improvement is not yet available in the latest release, but has been committed to Master on GitHub. Users experiencing this corruption problem are encouraged to use the master build from GitHub.

Please also note that the pre-release master build will not correct the corruption after it has occurred, so users experiencing the corruption will have to restore from a snapshot prior to being able to run with the new executables.

Infrastructure migration

November saw Veil’s hosted nodes and servers hosting tools such as snapshots and block explorers relocated to cut costs and lower downtime. This process required a period of unavailability of some resources as well as DNS changes. We apologize for inconveniences caused by these changes, but are confident they are worthwhile in the long run.

The block explorer, Veil Tools, and Veil Stats websites are all now available and correctly linked to both one the Veil website and within the wallet.

Marketing

After a very busy period of promotion on Twitter and other social platforms immediately following the 1.1 release, as well as promotions with WoolyPooly, November’s marketing efforts have been focused on tapping into the Chinese market.

Thriving Russian community

A big shout out to our Russian Veil community! It’s with great pleasure we’ve watched them flourish through sustained coordination between Aleksandr—our Russian Regional Coordinator—and Veil’s marketing and community management teams. The Russian community make up a large portion of our miners, and it’s through them we’ve seen Veil thrive on WoolyPooly and more recently on TradeOgre.

Interested in joining the Russian Veil community? You can find them on Telegram. Also feel free to reach out to Aleksandr on the Veil Discord (display name Alex).

Expanding into China

Following the success with the Russian Veil community, efforts in November have been focused on tapping into the Chinese market. I’ve personally worked with BruceYin, our Chinese Regional Coordinator on developing a plan for catering to the Chinese market. Naturally, there are a number of challenges involved, and these things take time, but we now have begun the ball rolling.

Anyone able to speak Chinese and wanting to join our Chinese community as we seek to grow it can do so by joining the official Veil Weibo account. We will begin posting news there regularly, hosting competitions and giveaways, and engaging with the Chinese crypto community from here on, and would love to have you with us.

As with Aleksandr, feel free to reach out to BruceYin on the Veil Discord (display name bruceyin).

Closing words

This concludes November’s update. As always, the team welcome questions or feedback on Discord or social media. Well-wishes to you all for the holiday season from the Veil team.

This article provides insight into Veil project developments for the month of November 2020.
